Comfort zones fence us in

Many of us set goals to move our lives forward. In doing so, we have to acknowledge that the process requires us to break out of our comfort zones.

While making us “comfortable,” these zones curb our growth. They fence us in. And our mindset determines whether or not we remain stuck in a particular environment or in an entrenched set of attitudes and behaviours.

Sometimes, the reason we stay within our zones lies in our low self-esteem which has been conditioned over time. We fear discomfort, distress, failure.

Yet, the risk of doing nothing is far greater.

The goal-setting process requires a strong self-belief. A strong belief in a new outcome. Studies of successful people show they get where they are by regularly stepping into unfamiliar, new spaces in the knowledge that they will adapt and grow.

They refuse to be fenced in.

We might look back at learning to ride a bike as a child and dismiss it as a minor achievement. At the time it was a big deal. It posed a significant challenge. And once we'd overcome our fear of moving without stabilisers, we began to enjoy exhilarating and liberating moments on two wheels.

Let's get pedalling.
